This is why it fits into Apple’s “China-plus-one” theory as they no longer want to be only reliant on a risk of political and corporate failure from one country in order to fulfill their global policy from remote local produced companies remote in China. With the production of iPhone’s made in India, Apple is capable of reducing risks by creating both a supply chain that is resilient to the forces of offshore dependence on Chinese exports, and utilizing the inputs of a rapidly emerging manufacturing country known for new electronic technological advancements.
By the end of part of September 2025, the iPhone 17 series launch will not only be a milestone for Apple but also make a mark for India’s smartphone manufacturing industry. All four versions of the iPhone 17 series, including the Pro versions, will be manufactured in India from the commencement of the product cycle. I don’t believe Apple has previously made this kind of bold statement since the introduction of its iPhone 16 series, which was also assembled in India, but went off the rails by manufacturing different models at different times which wasn’t prior planned but a halfhearted decision to fob us off. Not only will India be preparing to manufacture the iPhone 17, but it will be preparing to ship iPhone 17 model to a range of foreign countries including the US prior to the September 2025 launch.

The Role of India in Global iPhone Production
Apple has established a five-factory operation in India, and in addition to Tata Group’s new plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Foxconn has also committed to constructing its own plant near Bengaluru. With this new plant in Devanahalli, the largest Foxconn plant outside China will be operated, costing $2.8 billion to build. Each of these facilities will produce lenses for every iPhone 17, making this a big deal in the industry since every version, both standard and Pro, will have a local production variant from day one.
From April to July 2025, India exported $7.5 billion worth of iPhones the previous year’s import, almost half. This demonstrates the capacity for additional growth in production output in India, but importantly for the world, it confirms that India has the capacity to fulfill exports to avoid any shortages in global markets, which means apple comes to India in quantity when it needs to iPhone.
Analysts now expect Apple to ramp-up production to approximately 60 million iPhones this year compared to a production level in 2024-25 of 35 to 40 million units, an unprecedented increase. These are great signs for India to be one of the chief sources of iPhones globally.

“India is still an important lynchpin for Apple’s strategy for supply chain resilience and growth agenda in the following decade,” said Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group at CyberMedia Research. “This is shown by the fact that all of the iPhone 17 line-up is manufactured in India as the first os its kind. We see a clear growth trajectory for India in the global electronics value chain.”
India is a Growing Hub for Smartphone Manufacturing
India’s place in the role of smartphone manufacturing is not exclusive to Apple. Other premier brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, and Motorola have increased local manufacturing capabilities as well. Emerging brands like Lava, are also quickly growing. The support of government schemes such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and, Phased Manufacturing Programme improve and accelerate these efforts. Today, India is the second largest maker of mobile phones with more than 200 factories across India.
India’s electronics industry has been growing quickly. Smartphone exports grew by over 40 percent in 2023-24, and with Apple going from manufacturing just the iPhone generation within India to manufacturing the entire iPhone 17 series in India, the country is prepared to export the iPhone 17 in large volume. The strengthening of India as a global manufacturing destination will provide opportunities for employment and high-tech skills transfer.
Production of the iPhone 17 in India
Foxconn and Tata Group are seen as critical elements of the expansion of Apple within India. In the next few years, we expect the growth of Indian smartphone manufacturing to continue, and for India to have global significance in electronics exports. The iPhone 17 series is only the first act, and India is in motion as a substantial exporter of mobile devices.
