In a significant step toward international expansion, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is set to open its first overseas campus in Japan. Slated to begin operations next year, this move marks IIT Bombay’s formal entry into the global higher education arena, following in the footsteps of IIT Delhi’s campus in Abu Dhabi and IIT Madras’ branch in Zanzibar.
Instead of operating independently, IIT Bombay has opted for a strategic collaboration with Tohoku University — one of Japan’s most prestigious government-supported academic institutions. This partnership will initially launch with a PhD program focused on advanced research, with plans to introduce MTech (Master of Technology) courses in the near future.
The upcoming campus aims to serve as a hub for academic exchange, promoting stronger India-Japan relations through collaborative research, innovation, and cultural understanding. Currently, approximately 1,600 Indian students are pursuing higher education in Japan, and this number is expected to rise significantly as a result of the new partnership. Additionally, Japanese companies have consistently recruited graduates from IIT Bombay, further strengthening the collaborative ties between the two countries.
The forthcoming campus will initially concentrate on postgraduate programs, with a strong focus on research and innovation. At present, there are no plans to offer undergraduate degrees. This collaboration aims to harness the strengths of Japan’s advanced technological infrastructure alongside India’s expertise in software and engineering, fostering an environment conducive to both academic excellence and industrial growth.
